A compartment of the Banalata Express, the only non-stop intercity train on the Rajshahi-Dhaka route, derailed early Monday as it was entering Rajshahi Railway Station, disrupting services on the Rajshahi–Chapainawabganj line. The derailment occurred around 7:00 am, shortly after the train arrived from Chapainawabganj. The train had been scheduled to depart for Dhaka at the same time.According to Western Railway officials, a wheel of a coach broke off as the train approached platform number five, causing four wheels at one end of the coach to leave the tracks.
Although the bogie was damaged, no injuries were reported.
The incident has forced a suspension of services on the Rajshahi–Chapainawabganj route until the derailed coach is removed.
However, operations on other lines, including Dhaka-bound services, remain unaffected.
The Silk City Express and other scheduled intercity trains have departed on time.
Rajshahi Station Manager Shahidul Islam said the Banalata Express left Chapainawabganj at 6:00 am and a loud sound was heard as it reached Rajshahi an hour later.
Recovery work is underway, and authorities hope to resume operations as soon as possible.
Only one local mail train operating on the affected route has been delayed.
The Banalata Express was scheduled to arrive in Dhaka by noon, but the derailment has caused delays, leaving passengers stranded.
Railway authorities expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured that efforts are ongoing to restore normal services quickly.
